Cuauhtémoc Cárdenas Solórzano, a key figure in Mexico’s political history, has died. The former head of government of Mexico City and founder of the Party of the Democratic Revolution (PRD) passed away on October 28, prompting an outpouring of tributes from political leaders.

President Claudia Sheinbaum and former president Andrés Manuel López Obrador (AMLO) led the condolences, praising Cárdenas’s role in shaping Mexico’s democracy. AMLO described him as a “precursor of the democratic movement,” while Sheinbaum highlighted his impact on the 1988 presidential election.

A Legacy of Democratic Transformation

Cárdenas, the son of former president Lázaro Cárdenas del Río, was a three-time presidential candidate and a key figure in Mexico’s left-wing politics. His 1988 campaign, which challenged the dominant PRI party, was a landmark moment in the country’s democratic history.

Sheinbaum noted that Cárdenas’s role in that election, which was marred by allegations of fraud, marked the beginning of Mexico’s democratic transformation. She said, “That historic election day, in which he should have been recognized as president, marked the start of democratic change.”

Tributes from Across the Political Spectrum

The news of Cárdenas’s death prompted tributes from political figures across the spectrum. Former president Vicente Fox praised him as a man of “firm convictions” and a “dignified” leader. PRI leader Alejandro Moreno Cárdenas also expressed his condolences, acknowledging the engineer’s significant impact on Mexico‘s democratic history.

Ricardo Monreal, Morena’s coordinator in the Chamber of Deputies, described Cárdenas as an “integrity-filled man with firm convictions” and a key figure in Mexico’s left-wing movement. Miguel Ángel Mancera, former head of government of Mexico City, called him a “dear friend” and a “patriot.”

Cárdenas’s death marks the end of an era in Mexican politics. His contributions to the country’s democratic development and his unwavering commitment to social causes have left an indelible mark on the nation’s history.

A Lasting Impact on Mexican Politics

In a country where political change has often been hard-fought, Cárdenas’s contributions stand as a reminder of the power of conviction and perseverance. His passing is a moment for Mexico to honor his memory and reflect on the ongoing struggle for a more just and democratic society.
